Solid reasons to choose SPC software for small or mid-size businesses

This is the story of two small manufacturers who wanted to increase their quality level but weren’t sure where to begin. They had both heard of SPC software but thought that it was only for large companies with massive production output. One of the manufacturers decided for SPC software – and was immediately able to dive into powerful analytics which helped improve efficiency. The other – still struggles with tedious tasks and how to react in a timely manner.

Expected a happy ending? Here it is – statistical process control software can help manufacturers regardless of the size of their team or operation. This means that advanced statistics, automatic deviation detection, and a whole toolbox that was once too complex or too expensive for small and mid-sized manufacturers is now within reach. But should SPC software be your next investment? Here’s a few things to help you decide.

Streams of data transformed into insights and actions

Statistical Process Control (SPC) stands for a set of statistical tools that use Quality Control data to identify trends and patterns. It helps manufacturers to navigate the endless stream of data and turn it into valuable insights and actions.

Traditionally, all data used for process control was organized and analyzed in Excel. SPC software is a smart alternative to spreadsheets.

SPC software – additional benefits

Shifting to automated SPC is not only a clever alternative to Excel but a way to be more efficient and drive growth in your organization. To be more specific:

  • Consistent quality, less waste. Clear overviews and automatic non-conformity notifications ensure excellence. Maintaining a high level of quality prevents waste. Fewer defective products, less time needed to perform operational activities, no more wasted materials, etc. …which brings us to the next advantage.
  • Eliminate product recall. If for large manufacturers it’s expensive to recall goods, for small and mid-size businesses the financial impact can be devastating. Even more so if the product needs to be pulled off the shelves and consumers need to be alerted. As if the financial aspect wasn’t bad enough, consumers easily lose trust in brands that have suffered a recall. Regaining that trust and staying competitive is then easier said than done.
  • Turn process data into quality trends. With automation, many (costly) mistakes can be prevented. Real-time information and meaningful insights also mean more chances to focus on optimizing processes.
  • Reducing the feedback loop. When operators are able to use the SPC software on the shop floor and are alerted immediately, they can quickly respond to the deviations and adjust the machines or recipes, reducing the impact of the deviation and getting back on track with in-spec production quicker. Traditionally, with data analysis only being performed long after the whole batch has been produced, there was no way to adjust during production. This shortened feedback loop reduces waste.

With timely alerts and improved access to relevant data, it’s much easier for small and mid-sized manufacturers to ensure stability.
